Having Fun Watching One AI Talking to Another?
The internet is no longer what it used to be.
I’m genuinely afraid that the internet as we knew it seriously no longer exists. An internet where people still wrote their own posts and real people actually responded to them. Because mainly, we’re looking at AI-generated posts and comments from people who don’t know how to respond, who then use AI to leave a comment.
Or well, don’t know how to respond... You know, back in the day, you actually had to think for a moment about what you were going to say, and for that, you had to both read and understand the post. Which is obviously not easy these days, with the attention span of a paving slab and an adult brain whose cognitive ability has dropped to the level of a toddler since the release of ChatGPT.
It’s honestly bizarre how much things can change in just a few years.
Then, of course, you also have people who do actually know what they want to say, but don’t dare to say it. They can use AI to post a more confident response because it has been thought up by a supercomputer and sort of curated, after which they can still curate it themselves and decide whether they agree with it or not. This is very convenient of course, because if a discussion then starts, they don’t really have to face the confrontation themselves anymore because they have AI backup for the comments that were left by… AI.
Then you have the people who want to post as many comments as possible to get noticed. This increases their visibility and the chance that someone will check out their profile and subscribe or hit that follow button. Posting maybe hundreds of comments a day obviously isn’t possible on a human level, so then AI gets abused to do this, after which the post “owner” also uses AI again to respond to those comments.
So the consumer, who is just casually scrolling and looking for something to laugh at or something that broadens their horizon, is mostly sitting there watching one AI post something and other AIs respond to it.
How… fun?
I already thought scrolling was a waste of my time, but this has now gained a whole new dimension. I know, this is a belief or assumption of mine, because I can never prove 100% that people are actually doing this using AI and all, but my gut feeling tells me this is how things work nowadays. And why do I think that? Because I experienced the rise of social media. I have seen such a ridiculous number of posts in my life that it is completely obvious to me that what I’m seeing now is no longer “real.” It differs massively from back then.
Everyone is suddenly an expert, a multiple business owner, a coach, a guru, and a lot of people talk in the way I’ve come to know AI talks. And yes, by now I do know how AI talks. Since November 2022, I’ve had many conversations with different LLMs (Large Language Models for those who have been living under a rock), and let’s just say I’ve gained “the necessary experience” with them. Besides that, I’ve also done everything I’m describing in this post myself, and if I do it, I’m probably not the only one.
But it does make me realize again that sometimes I honestly start feeling sick of all this. We are no longer consuming human content, but mostly AI-generated content.
Even at work this is happening, you know. I recently had to take a course, mandatory, and I swear to you, I have never experienced anything so brain-deadening. The content, sure, was all in line with what it had to be, but it was all generated by AI. On top of that, our e-learning courses are no longer taught by people, but we have to listen to text-to-speech. Not just any TTS! No, the most boring robotic voice EVER. Jesus, man, no wonder I’m going to use AI to generate the answers for me, because how the hell am I supposed to keep my attention on it like this? I don’t even WANT to think for myself if this is how it has to be. Fuck off with that.
I still remember very clearly when I was on my employer’s works council and we had to attend training twice a year. We always went to a hotel, and the lessons were taught by PEOPLE. And the guy who came there to teach us a thing or two always explained everything so well. He didn’t just have humor; he also knew how to make it genuinely interesting. See, that sticks with you. Those aren’t just lessons; they are complete experiences you don’t forget. That is what I miss!
I would love to see that online again too. A human being telling me something. A post where I know it came straight from someone’s heart. Believe me, people, you need to cherish the real human creators, because there are hardly any left. I don’t mean to be rude, but those 2 dollars a month or fucking 20 bucks a year actually help contribute to that.

I want to be able to do this full-time. To remain human for you. That is really the least I can do. If my writing has made you laugh, think, or question humanity for a minute, you can now support it for just $2 a month or $20 a year.
Everything remains free to read. This is simply a tip jar with fewer awkward social expectations.

Oh my gosh, yes, yes and yes. The future scares the shit out of me. Great article, Wes.
